Shekha Jheel – The 12th Ramsar Site of Uttar Pradesh

Shekha Jheel, located in the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, has been notified as the 12th Ramsar site of the state. It is an important stopover along the Central Asian Flyway. This lake is a matter of pride not only for Aligarh but for the entire state, as thousands of migratory birds from across the seas make it their home during the winter season.

If you want to spend peaceful moments close to nature and witness colorful migratory birds, Shekha Jheel is an excellent destination. Its true beauty shines during the winter months. As October begins, thousands of birds travel long distances to reach this lake. Around 40–45 different species of migratory birds can be seen here together, making it a truly fascinating sight. Although you can visit in summer to enjoy the greenery and calm surroundings, the best time to visit is between November and February, when thousands of birds are present.

The notification of new Ramsar sites is expected to boost tourism in these areas. This will create employment opportunities for local people and strengthen the local economy. Conservation of wetlands is extremely important for biodiversity, water resources, and maintaining ecological balance.
